05/07/2009 - Williamsburg, VA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Lorena Ochoa fired a seven-under 64 to take the first-round lead Thursday at the Michelob Ultra Open.
Fresh off a win in her last start, Ochoa made two significant birdie runs at Kingsmill to build a one-shot lead over Lindsey Wright.
Planning for a long day -- she anticipated a rain delay -- Ochoa was pleased to see the bad weather disappear after a few holes. She played the end of her round downwind, making birdies on her last two holes.
"When I stepped out of my room this morning, and I saw that it was warm, I thought, it's OK. I can do this," said Ochoa.
Wright posted a bogey-free 65 and is alone in second place. Sarah Lee, Hee-Won Han and Minea Blomqvist shot five-under 66s to share third place.
Ochoa played her first three holes in the rain and made two birdies. She knocked an eight-iron to 20 feet at No. 1 for her first birdie, then rolled in a six-foot putt at No. 3 for her second.
The Mexican star drained a 25-footer for birdie at No. 5 and a 14-footer at No. 7 to make the turn at four-under par.
"It was a good start," said Ochoa. "In the morning it was raining, and I thought it was going to be a long day, and I was planning for it to be a delay. But it ended up being fine."
Continuing her fine play, Ochoa made back-to-back birdies at the 12th and 13th, sticking a wedge shot within four feet at 12 and hitting a seven-iron to 16 feet at 13.
Ochoa made her only bogey of the round at the par-four 16th, where an errant drive gave the world No. 1 a bad lie for her second shot. She missed the green to the left and couldn't get up-and-down.
She bounced back with consecutive birdies to end her round.
Playing downwind, Ochoa hit an eight-iron at the 163-yard 17th and made a seven-foot birdie putt. She tackled her 100-yard approach at the 18th with 54-degree wedge, knocking it to 10 feet for her closing birdie.
Ochoa won the LPGA's last tournament, the Corona Championship in her native Mexico, for her second title of the season. She now has 26 career wins -- but the Michelob Ultra Open isn't among them.
"I don't want to put pressure on myself. It's just one more week, one more great tournament, and I have a pretty good record [here]," said Ochoa. "Of course, I am working really hard for the win. I don't need to put pressure on myself. I'm going to do my best. This is only the start."
Last year at Kingsmill, Ochoa finished 12 shots behind winner Annika Sorenstam after failing to break 70 the last two rounds.
The win ended up being Sorenstam's last LPGA Tour title. Three days later, the Hall of Fame Swede announced she would retire at the end of the '08 season.

Is there such a thing as a trap game in the NFL?
I once asked that question to Pete Korner, who at the time was office manager and a senior linesmaker for Las Vegas Sports Consultants.
Korner almost ripped my head off. There is no such thing as a trap game, he loudly berated me. It’s a myth. The numbers are made using power ratings, he said.
There are trap games, though. They just might not be what you think. The perception is of a good team, say Philadelphia, laying a small number against New Orleans.
Using the highly-respected power ranking from The Gold Sheet, you’d find the Eagles with a power rating of 4 and the Saints at 8. When you factor the game being played in New Orleans, you could see why the line opened so short at less than a field goal.
For some, this makes it enticing to take the Eagles. That’s not a real trap game, though.
A real trap game, says professional gambler Dave Malinsky, is thinking you’re getting value betting a bad team, which brings us to the Oakland Raiders-Denver Broncos matchup.
The Raiders are +15 in this long-standing division rivalry. Denver is on a short week having dispatched Baltimore Monday. However, the Raiders haven’t covered the spread their last 10 games.
Many bettors don’t trust the Raiders to give a full effort. Few think much of Art Shell and his Oakland’s coaching staff.
So oddsmakers have to do something to make Oakland attractive if they hope to get equal action.
Now Malinsky is a value shopper. But he won’t touch the Raiders even getting more than two touchdowns.
“I try to eliminate the undisciplined, unfocused teams because they’re the ones most likely to suffer the bad beats,” he said.
Near the top of Malinsky’s list of stay-away teams is the Miami Dolphins, who have yet to cover a spread this season.
“Whatever you think of Nick Saban, you have to look at the penalties and turnovers,” Malinsky said.
It’s easy to point out the Dolphins failed to get the money this past week against New England because Olindo Mare missed a field goal and had another field goal blocked. But even though the Dolphins outgained the Patriots, 283-213, they committed eight penalties.
Bad teams not only cost themselves victories, but pointspread covers as well. The Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers are two more examples.
The Cardinals couldn’t have been in a better position this past Sunday, up 14-0 at home against a mediocre Kansas City Chiefs squad. But they couldn’t hold it. The Packers got a push against St. Louis, but also could have won losing by three when Brett Favre fumbled at the St. Louis 11-yard line with 44 seconds left.
“The Packers were in a position to beat Philadelphia, too,” Malinsky said. “But they couldn’t even cover double digits.
“These teams just make mistakes and it costs you … they always will look good from a value standpoint. They really will. But that’s the trap.”
Houston and Tennessee rank among the six-worst teams. Malinsky wouldn’t be afraid to take either of these teams, however, if the price were high enough.
The Texans are bad, Malinsky said, but they have some discipline. The Titans showed they could not only come up with an outstanding game plan, but execute it as well, losing by one to the Colts on the road as an 18 ?-point underdog this past Sunday.
“Jeff Fisher is a worker,” Malinsky said of the Titans coach. “I’m not sure how hard Art Shell wants to work when he gets out of bed.”
Fisher, though, could be out as Tennessee coach after this season. Is he still worth backing in the right spot, with the right price, as a lame duck coach?
“It’s in his nature to keep working hard and not worry about any possible lame duck status,” Malinsky said. “He’s coaching for his resume.”

New York, NY – October 3, 2007 – The dress rehearsal is over! The NHL preseason has ended and now that fans have had a glimpse of what is to come it is time to hit the book! Stanley Cup odds are live at MySportsbook.com, the world’s largest online sportsbook and casino.
The Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings remain on top of the odds charts after an impressive start in the preseason. Betting lines opened for both teams at 6-1 in June. Since then the Sens have fallen to 7-1 and the Red Wings are now caught in a pack including the defending champion Carolina Hurricanes, the San Jose Sharks and the Anaheim Ducks, all at 10-1.
MySportsbook.com has also posted props on each team’s point total for the regular season. The Senators lead the charge at 108.5 followed by the Ducks at 106.5. Detroit will attempt a repeat for the prize as the Red Wings are deadlocked with the Predators at 104.5 a piece. The temporary loss of highly touted rookie Evgeni Malkin puts a lot of pressure on the stick of assistant captain Sidney Crosby - his lowly Pittsburgh Penguins are listed at 71.5.
Even if bettors are not brave enough to put their money on the underdog, an early bet on the favorites at sportsbook.com tends to produce bigger payouts than a mid-season wager. Placing a $1,000 bet last summer on the Detroit Red Wings or Ottawa Senators would have paid out to $8,000 and $10,000 respectively, opposed to a $2,500 or $3,000 payout at the beginning of the playoffs.
